  • Job Summary
The Apostolides Lab is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellows to understand the synaptic and cellular bases of auditory perception. Our primary techniques are patch-clamp electrophysiology and 2-photon imaging in brain slices and in behaving mice.

Key questions we want to answer are:

-How do neural circuits extract meaningful information from noisy or ambiguous sensory signals?

-How do “higher order”, associational brain regions control the encoding of behaviorally relevant auditory information in “primary” sensory regions?

-How do long-range descending projections in the central auditory system control auditory processing and perception?

-To what extent do neuromodulators such as serotonin, noradrenaline and acetylcholine control specific cell-types in central auditory circuits, and what are the consequences for central auditory function?

-What are the cellular mechanisms governing synaptic plasticity in animal models of hearing disorders?

The Apostolides Lab is the newest member of the Kresge Hearing Research Institute (KHRI), University of Michigan Medical School. KHRI and the neuroscience community at the U-M provide a highly supportive and diverse research environment and excellent career development opportunities for postdoctoral fellows.

    Required Qualifications*
Ph.D. and/or M.D. in neuroscience or related field.
Experience in patch clamp electrophysiology, 2-photon imaging, animal behavior, and/or acoustics/auditory psychophysics.
Detail-oriented, quantitative mindset and experience with scientific programming (Matlab, python, or R) is critical.
Strong organizational, leadership skills and passion for scientific discovery.
Exceptional ability to work with a team as well as to work independently and be extremely self-motivated to complete projects.
